A boil is the tender, pus-filled, red bump that is warm and painful.  They have a yellow or white point in the center of the lump that you can see when it is ready to drain or discharged the pus.  If you have a very bad infection, then multiple boils may develop and you could experience swollen lymph nodes or fever.  You may notice itching before the boil develops.  Boils can be found anywhere on your body including the under arms, face, thighs, shoulders, buttocks and back.  Today we are going to discuss how to treat a boil.

At times, a boil can cause unpleasant odors especially when they are drained or discharge is coming out.  Boils are usually caused by an infection of your hair follicles.  At first to your skin may just look a little bit irritated, red and tender.  After awhile the area may become hard and a painful bump will form.

A boil is an infection of the skin and it forms because the skin is clogged and infected.  It is important to wash the area with an antibacterial soap.  Use a cloth soaked in warm salt water.  You can also try Epsom salt baths as Epsom salt has a drying effect.  Some people have had results by using a paste made of baking soda and water and applying it on to the boil.

Try these methods to see if they help.  If they do not seem to be helping, you may need to visit your Physician who can prescribe a course of antibiotics to kill the bacteria that caused the boil.

It is not recommended to lance the boil as this can spread the bacteria onto your skin and cause even more boils.  A trained health professional may drain of the boil using a needle.  It is however, not recommended that you try this at home.  Whether these methods work for you or you need to visit your Physician, I hope these tips on how to treat a boil have been helpful to you.
